What Is a Root Canal?
A root canal treatment (endodontic therapy) is performed for the infected or inflamed tooth pulp-the soft tissue within your tooth that comprises both nerves and blood vessels. We clean and disinfect the tooth, then seal it instead of second guessing the extraction.
Safe, routine, and virtually painless with modern-day techniques are just a few descriptor terms for root canal.
When Do You Need a Root Canal?
Common signs include:
- Hard-to-bear, long-lasting toothache
- Sensitivity to hot or cold
- Swelling of the gums or tenderness
- Darkening or discoloration of the tooth
- Pimple-like bumps on the gums (abscesses)
- Pain when chewing or biting
Ignoring these pains will lead to infection spreading to other teeth, the bone, or into the bloodstream.

Root Canal Treatment Process
Here is a general treatment procedure:
1. Diagnosis & X-Rays
We use digital X-rays to examine the tooth and verify that infection has occurred.
2. Anesthesia & Isolation
We anesthetize the area and isolate the tooth to retain dryness.
3. Filling & Sealing
Biocompatible material is used to fill the canal, sealing it against any chance of re-infection.
4. Crown Placement (Recommended)
A tooth crown will usually be placed on the treated tooth to restore strength and protect it indefinitely.
Nowadays, almost all root canals can finish in one or two visits!.
Benefits of Root Canal Treatment
- Immediate pain relief
- Preservation of one’s natural tooth
- Fully restores all functions (chewing, biting)

Periodontal Maintenance Plan
Post treatment, it is recommended to have periodontal maintenance every 3 months to keep the gums free of infection. This involves:
- Specialized cleaning
- Checking for pocket depths
- With or without fluoride or antibacterial rinses
- Greatest investment that can be made for prevention is good oral health.

Does a Root Canal Hurt?

FAQs
1. How long does a root canal take?
Most procedures can be completed in 1 or 2 sessions that last around 45 to 90 minutes.
2. Will I need a crown after that?
Yes, especially for molars or severely decayed teeth; a crown is used to protect the tooth from fracture.
3. Can a root canal fail?
Otherwise very rare, re-infection sometimes occurs if aftercare isn’t practiced. If needed, we will provide re-treatment.
4. How long does the result last for?
If one practices good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, a root canal should last for a lifetime.
